FAQs

Melasma

Melasma is an irregular facial pigmentation that presents itself as brown to grey brown patches. It is very commonly seen in women and is often located on the upper lip, upper cheek areas and forehead. Find out what triggers this skin condition and a few important steps to help improve even stubborn cases.

What causes Melasma?

Often called hormonal pigmentation, Melasma is stimulated by fluctuations of the hormone estrogen due to pregnancy, oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy. Sun exposure is also often strongly associated with Melasma.

How can the Medispa Institute help?

A condition mainly affecting women, it will sometimes fade along with the hormones after childbirth, hormone therapy or oral contraceptive use. However, some women still deal with persistent Melasma spots even after hormones have leveled off.

As with all our patients, we will initiate your Melasma treatment with our Vectra 3D imaging system. After your complexion analysis, we will classify your case as either epidermal or dermal. Deeper, dermal cases are more difficult to treat and usually require a combination of treatments such as:

  • Medical Grade Skin Care and Sun Protection. Diligent daily use of a clinical-strength topical skin brightener and an SPF 30 plus zinc-based sunscreen will help reduce Melasma.
  • Exfoliation Treatment Plan. In conjunction with a targeted home skin care plan, we can treat the condition with light chemical peels, IPL photo rejuvenation or microdermabrasion. These treatments will assist in shifting the melanin deposits from the affected area to reveal a refreshed complexion.

Broken Capillaries & Redness

Unwanted vascular lesions and redness can occur on the face and décolletage. Find out more about the causes, manifestations and treatments of this common concern.

What causes broken capillaries, facial redness and rosacea?

Vascular lesions are formed by large vessels or a cluster of vessels under the skin. Causes include external conditions like extreme weather and sun exposure without protection, as well as internal triggers like ageing, heredity, hormones, pregnancy and high blood-pressure.

What are the signs and symptoms of broken vessels and rosacea?

There are many forms of vascular lesions. From port wine stains and cherry angiomas to broken capillaries and hemangiomas, they cause an unwanted concentrated area of redness on the skin.

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition that usually manifests on the face. Symptoms include general redness, small broken vessels and, in some cases, pustules.

How can Medispa Institute help?

We can develop a home care and non-surgical treatment plan to nourish your skin while reducing unwanted vessels, redness and rosacea on the face and décolletage. Patients will need between two and four treatments.

Redness can also be maintained with a consistent home care regime program. Harsh skin care products can irritate the symptoms of rosacea and vascular lesions. We recommend and use Redless by Aspect Dr.

Lifestyle changes will also help. Sun exposure is a major trigger. We recommend wearing a high SPF zinc-based sunblock daily.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation can be triggered by a number of factors – UV sun exposure, hormonal changes, skin trauma or genetic pre disposition.
Sun exposure;  Many people believe that tanned skin is healthy skin. In actual fact, tanned skin is damaged skin. The ultraviolet radiation (UV) in sunlight penetrates the deepest layers of skin, and harms the cells. The body responds by forming pigment to protect itself, but damage is easily done, and may be permanent. The more exposure you have to the sun, the more likely you are to develop skin cancer later in life.

UV radiation leads to many skin problems including sunburn, age spots, wrinkles, dehydration, pigmentation, freckles and allergic rashes. Most importantly, overexposure to the sun is the major cause of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Trauma to the skin

This type of pigmentation can be a result of physical trauma to the skin, for example through an undesired side effect from a clinical procedure or through acne. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Skin pigmentation can also be present at birth (birthmarks), appear in childhood, or adulthood.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Sweat is a necessary part of life. In fact, the body sweats to regulate temperature. Hyperhidrosis occurs when your body sweats beyond this point. We often see excess sweat from the armpits and palms.

What causes excess sweating?

The cause is actually unknown. There is some research to suggest, however, that hyperhidrosis is linked to the sympathetic nervous system and its activity.

How can the Medispa Institute help?

We can recommend effective antiperspirants to help control excess sweating day-to-day. For a more lasting approach, we can perform hyperhidrosis injectable treatment in the underarm.

How long does each injectable session last and what are the results?

With only 15 minutes and minimal discomfort, you can enjoy seven to nine months free from excessive sweat. The injectables work by blocking sweat-causing chemicals.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects thousands of people. The cause of rosacea is not known and there is no cure. Medical treatment is available to help treat and keep signs and symptoms of rosacea under control and maintained.
Common signs of rosacea include:

  • Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead.
  • Small visible blood vessels on the face.
  • Bumps or pimples on the face.
  • Watery or irritated eyes.

Rosacea is a chronic disorder and is typically characterized by relapses and remissions. Treatment for rosacea may include medical therapy and lifestyle modifications. Watching for triggers, which may not be the same from one person to the next, and continuing therapy seem to help prevent recurrence of symptoms.

A Full Broad Spectrum SPF is recommended daily, as well as skin care products that do not contain harsh chemicals or ingredients that may irritate or cause a rosacea flare. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, a topical prescription may be recommended.

In addition to medical treatment, many rosacea sufferers also seek cosmetic treatments to treat signs and symptoms of the disorder. We offer cosmetic treatments etc.

Discolouration

You want a healthy glow, but you are struggling with a persistently dull and uneven skin tone. Find out more about this common concern and what we can do to rejuvenate your complexion.

What are skin discolouration ?

Skin discolouration are visible skin imperfections that appear as dark spots. Common manifestations include:

  • Age spots
  • Freckles caused by the sun
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Photoageing
  • Pregnancy mask

What causes dark spots?

Dark spots come in many forms. Here are three common causes.

  1. Hyperpigmentation is darkening due to an increased amount of melanin in the skin. The primary causes include damage due to injury or illness.
  2. The gray-ish brown patches on your face can be Melasma. This condition is linked to fluctuating hormone levels.
  3. Acne trauma, especially on spots that have been picked, can leave behind lasting marks called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

What causes light, patchy skin tone?

There are also conditions that cause your skin to lighten. Here are two of the most common.

  1. Hypopigmentation is lightening of the skin due to damage.
  2. When melanin production stops, it is called Vitiligo. The result is white patches on the skin.

How can sun damage affect skin tone?

Excessive sun exposure is one of the most common causes of skin damage. Over exposure triggers the over activity of tanning cells (melanocytes) which results in ageing and discolouration. Symptoms of sun damage include redness, brown age spots, white spots and more.

When should I schedule a skin exam?

Regular skin exams are important for everyone. Make an appointment immediately if you notice symptoms like the following.

  • Changes in spot shape or colour, this can be a symptom of Skin Cancer.
  • Persistent, oddly shaped splotches, this can be a symptom of Fungal or Bacterial Infections.

How can Medispa Institute help?

There are many non-surgical treatments that can restore and rejuvenate your natural glow. During our initial consultation, we can walk through the best options for your skin condition and concerns.

Stretch Marks & Surgical Scars

Scars can develop as part of the body’s healing response to a wound that occurs. There are many different kinds of scars and depending on the type of scar, there are various types of treatment options. Scars occur when there is damage to the dermis, or deeper, thicker layer of the skin.
Stretch marks, or striae, typically appear after rapid weight gain/loss or when skin is constantly being stretched. Stretch marks occur in the dermis and are a form of scarring that can happen when the skin does not bounce back after being stretched.

Early treatment for stretch marks is best. Depending on the colour of your skin, stretch marks can start out pink, red, purple, brown and then in the final stages can become white or silver.

Most treatments you hear about for stretch marks are not very effective, particularly once they are in the final stages.

Treatment options may include:

  • Steroid injections for raised keloid or hypertrophic scars
  • Silicone scar treatments
  • Laser resurfacing
  • Dermal needling
  • Microdermabrasion

Acne

Reclaim your complexion with our acne and acne-related treatment programs. We address both the causes and symptoms of this common skin concern to create a customised treatment program for each of our patients. Call today for your acne consultation.

What causes acne?

Acne (acne vulgaris) is caused by a combination of physiological factors. Hormones trigger excessive sebum production. When met with bacteria, excessive sebum can cause clogged follicles. This, in turn, thickens the outer layer of the skin leading to inflammation and acne.

Are there any other factors in severe cases?

Genetics actually play a large role in acne severity. Heredity determines skin cell proliferation and sebaceous oil activity and size. The amount of sebum is closely related to acne profusion.

When does acne manifest?

Hormonal changes during adolescence activate the enlargement of sebaceous glands. This is the most common time for acne to initially emerge.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Acne may present as open (i.e. whiteheads) and closed comedones (i.e. blackheads). It is also common for inflamed lesions (red pimples that are pus filled or cystic) to manifest.

Are there any long term risks?

This skin condition can result in scarring and pigmented marks (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

How can Medispa Institute help?

We will customize our proven acne treatment program to address your specific concerns, symptoms and case severity. We take a three-step approach for lasting results.

  1. Clear acne lesions.
  2. Reduce inflammation.
  3. Encourage healing.

 How long will treatment take?

The early stages may take up to 6 weeks depending on frequency of treatments and initial skin condition. Maintenance treatments and a medical grade home care plan will continue to keep the skin in good condition.

Ageing Hands & Decolletage

Often exposed to sun, the delicate skin on your hands, neck and décolletage are among the first parts of the body to visibly age. Find out how damage impacts these areas and how to reverse these unwanted effects with the latest technology and treatment options.

What causes premature hand ageing?

Sun exposure plus the natural loss of collage and volume over the years.

What are common signs of ageing on the hands?

Natural ageing and sun damage cause:

  • Textural changes
  • Wrinkles
  • Protruding veins
  • Unwanted age spots

How can Medispa Institute help?

We’ve found that many of our facial skin techniques can be applied to the hands. These methods will improve the overall appearance by evening out skin tone and improving texture. We can develop your custom hand treatment plan during your consultation.

Ageing Neck and Décolletage

What are the signs of ageing on the neck and décolletage?

The skin on your chest is already delicate. Years of excessive sun and natural ageing cause the skin to become even thinner. The result: blotchy, uneven skin tone, thick, leathery texture and tell-tale wrinkles.

How can Medispa Institute help?

We can apply the latest technology and non-surgical treatments even on this stubborn area of concern. We will develop a customised plan to address and visibly reverse each sign of ageing.

Loss of Youthful Texture: We can address texture and volume issues with dermal fillers. This treatment improves skin hydration and collagen formation resulting in a natural, fresher appearance.

Uneven Skin Tone: Melanin gives skin colour. When skin cells are damaged by the sun, melanin production can increase resulting in a red, blotchy tone, hyperpigmentation and pigmented lesions.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) laser therapy can correct these signs of ageing with a minimum of two sessions for our décolletage patients.

Between Treatment Skin Care: Medical grade skin care will continue to treat the signs of sun damage on the skin of the neck and décolletage. Improvements you can achieve include:

  • Improved texture
  • Break down of pigmentation
  • Reduced Redness

Freckles

If you have more freckles than you fancy, we can give you the clear, even-toned complexion you desire. Learn more about this common concern, our treatment plans and the best options for you.

What causes freckles?

Freckles (ephelides) are small, flat tan, brown or black dots. While genetics does play a role in your predisposition for freckles, they are caused and darkened by regular sun exposure.

The sun activates melanin which produces these tiny spots of pigment. Freckles are most commonly found on the arms and face, areas routinely subjected to the sun’s rays.

When should you get a skin check?

Freckles that don’t change colour or shape are harmless. However, if freckles are in your genes, you are at a higher risk for skin cancer. Keep an eye on your skin, and schedule an exam with any abnormal developments.

How can the Medispa Institute help?

From medical grade skin care to IPL treatments, freckles can be cosmetically treated to deliver a more even complexion. One of our medical professionals will create a customised plan to clear and refresh your skin tone. Then, we’ll recommend a suncare programme to help you avoid further discolouration.
