Chemical Peels – How To Achieve Youthful Skin
The skin is continually going through a natural exfoliation process, however as we grow older the epidermal cell turnover really slows down. Because of that, our skin becomes dull and thickened which gives the very top layer an unhealthy appearance with too many dead cells just sitting there.
In our youth, the same skin cells renew themselves every 21 to 28 days and this process progressively takes longer and longer. By the time you reach 50 years old plus, renewal can stretch out to between 42 days and 80 days for those dead cells to shift on their own.
The result is : due to the thick old layers of skin – wrinkles and fine lines are more pronounced, the skin underneath can become stressed causing a rough texture, skin tone appearance looking uneven, pigmentation marks get darker and a lack of penetration of nutrients from good quality active ingredients.
How to regain the glow and do your skin a favour
To improve circulation, texture, healthy collagen and elastin production and even out skin tone and appearance incorporate a regular chemical peel with alternating microdermabrasion treatment. These weekly or monthly treatments not only assist in skin rejuvenation but also prevent premature aging. Leaving your skin’s appearance to a standard that you would have never anticipated possible.
Facial peels are a non invasive procedures that renews the skin by chemically lifting dead cells off the surface of the skin and in the layers of the skin. In turn, stimulating the cellular turnover for growth and renewal – an age-defying process.
We recommend that before any treatment is started a proper assessment of the skin and history is made to ensure the best and correct options are worked out and program created for the optimum results. Once the client is evaluated thoroughly a pigmentation lightening cream is the first step, starting on this 2-3 weeks before the first peel to acclimatize the skin and prevent PIH (post inflammatory pigmentation) which can happen with any procedure. By taking this step, we also have prepared the dermis and increase the quality of the skin and it’s response to the peel.
Peels also gently stimulate collagen production and increases the skin’s natural moisture factor.
What to expect after a peel
In most cases the skin will feel a little tight for up to 48 hours after the treatment with a mild redness just after the peel which goes away between 2 – 24 hours. There are several skin peel options which range from superficial to medium depth peels. Depending on the depth and type of peel, there can be very mild flaking ranging to a treatment followed by dark scaling that sloughs itself off after several days. To get the maximum results the correct peel should be applied weekly in some cases, a repeated monthly when treating deeper in the dermis until the desired clinical result is achieved
All skin exfoliation treatments will make the skin more sensitive to the sun. No matter what your skin type sun exposure should be avoided and a sunscreen of SPF30 must be used daily.
What results to expect
Most importantly the skin starts to behave as a younger skin with pigmentation reduced in all skin types. You will notice a reduction in the size of fine lines, wrinkles which become less apparent, so does the enlarged pores. The texture of skin is more refined so are any superficial scars. Oil is reduced with acne improving. Leaving the skin more youthful and healthier.
