Hyperhidrosis

Sweating or perspiration is a normal part of life and is very important in the regulation our body temperature. However, in some people the sweating can become excessive and have significant physical and psychological effects on their daily lives. Hyperhidrosis is common, affecting up to 3% of the population. At Medispa Institute we specialize in the use of anti-wrinkle injections for the treatment of excess sweating.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is characterised by sweating in excess of the normal needs of the body. It is classified as either primary or secondary hyperhidrosis.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

This is the most common reason why we see people for excessive sweating. There is no underlying cause for the abnormal sweating, the autonomic nervous system that control the sweat glands are simply overactive. It can affect all areas, or just one area only, like the armpits, hands, feet or scalp. There may be a family history and it usually affects both sides equally, and is less of a problem at night and cooler months.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

There are multiple medical conditions that can lead to excessive sweating, so it is extremely important that you are examined thoroughly by either Dr Turner or your local general practitioner before undergoing any treatment for hyperhidrosis. The treatment of secondary hyperhidrosis will require treatment of the underlying problem or cause.

What About Anti-Perspirant Sprays For Hyperhidrosis?

The first line treatment for excessive sweating is anti-perspirant spray with a higher concentration of aluminium chloride. The aluminium chloride is the main component found in over the counter deodorants and works by blocking the sweat gland ducts to minimise sweating. For those with excessive sweating a higher dose anti-perspirant an be purchased from your chemist.

How Long Do The Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last?

While the effects of anti-wrinkle injections to relax facial muscles only lasts 3 to 4 months, the effects on sweat glands is much longer. The average duration of effect in hyperhidrosis is treatment is 7 months, with some experiencing benefits up to 13 months before sweating returns gradually back to its pre-treatment level. So we recommend to get your anti-wrinkle injections coming into the warmer months so you can get the full benefit throughout summer.

The Anti-Wrinkle Injection Procedure For Hyperhidrosis?

To accurately determine the location of the sweat glands in the armpit we perform a starch – iodine test. The armpit is covered with iodine and than corn starch is applied to the area. The perspiration combines with the iodine and the glucose in the starch and turns black instantly in the areas of excess sweating. This allows us to target the anti-wrinkle injections to those areas most affected by the excess sweating.

After the start – iodine test is performed and the area requiring treatment is marked out and cleaned with antiseptic we can perform the injections. This requires multiple small injections but is done with an ultra-fine syringe and only takes a few minutes to perform. There is minimal discomfort during the procedure and you can resume to normal activities immediately.

It is recommended that you get a referral from your local doctor as hyperhidrosis is considered a medical condition and you are eligible to claim a rebate for the consultation.
