Jaw Line Slimming
Many people have enlarged or hypertrophic masseter muscles which is related to involuntary or habitual clenching and grinding of the teeth, typically at night. This is termed Bruxism and is associated with headaches, facial pain as well as multiple dental problems. It is a very common problem affecting up to 30% of the normal population.
Over time the increased bulk of the masseter muscle can result in aesthetic concerns. It alters the shape of the jawline, creating a more masculine square jaw line. This is why jawline slimming treatments for Bruxism has become so popular. Not only does it relieve the symptoms associated with teeth grinding but also results in a cosmetic benefit of slimming of the lower aspect of the face. It can completely transform a person’s profile from a masculine square to feminine oval profile in a matter of weeks.
The Procedure For Masseter Reduction Or Jawline Slimming?
Masseter reduction with anti-wrinkle injections requires expertise and judgement by a doctor with experience in this procedure. Firstly, an outline of the masseter muscle is marked onto the skin with an eyeliner pencil and the lower half to third of the muscle that is to be treated is defined. The actual injections into the masseter muscle only take a few moments to complete and the total procedure is over in 20 minutes. While some redness may be seen at the site of injection, it usually dissipates within one hour.
How Long Do The Anti-Wrinkle Injections Last?
The injection of the anti-wrinkle injection causes the masseter muscle to relax and shrink over time which results in the slimming of the jawline. The full effect after the first injection is seen after 8 weeks. At this stage a top up procedure can be performed to get added slimming. Follow up treatments are often required after 9 – 12 months.
With ongoing treatment of the masseter muscle, the muscle continues to atrophy (become smaller) and so longer periods between treatments are required. As the muscle is now smaller and less active the subsequent doses required also become less.
